Travelers leaving Egypt for the USA used to need a PCR or rapid antigen test in order to return, which will not be necessary as of Sunday, June 12, 2022.

Travelers leaving Egypt and heading to the United States will NO LONGER need to get a negative Covid-19 test prior to travel. Read more about what is still required in order to enter Egypt, and where to get a Covid-19 rapid antigen or PCR test in Cairo, if you still need it to travel to another country.

What this means:

On Friday, 10 June, 2022, the U.S. government announced that starting at midnight on Sunday, 12 June, 2022, travelers will no longer need to have a negative Covid-19 PCR or Rapid Antigen test in order to travel from a foreign country to the United States by air.

Like before, travelers from Egypt to the United States do not need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to enter the country.

What this change means is that travelers in Egypt who are flying directly to the United States will no longer need to get any Covid tests within Egypt before their flight. Travelers will still need to check the requirements of airports and countries they are transiting through though, to make sure they do not have their own requirements regarding Covid-19 testing and vaccinations. For example, if someone has a 12 hour layover in Paris, and wants to go into the city, they still may be required to have a negative Covid-19 test or show proof of vaccination in order to enter. This is just an example—each country varies, and requirements can change at any time. I recommend looking at each individual airport website and each country’s health department website in order to get the up-to-date requirements. Travelers should check these requirements periodically before travel to make sure they have not changed.

Old requirements, like masks on airplanes and Covid-19 testing, seem to be going away, at least in the United States.

Do I still need a Covid-19 test to enter Egypt?

It depends. In short, travelers who are fully vaccinated do not need a Covid-19 test, but travelers who are not vaccinated will need a negative rapid antigen or PCR test taken no sooner than 72 hours before the traveler’s last direct flight to Egypt. What if I still want/need a Covid test while in Egypt?

Some travelers may leave Egypt and head to a country that still requires a negative PCR or rapid antigen test for entry, or other travelers may still want a Covid-19 test while in Egypt. There is a great testing service I recommend in Cairo that can take care of all of your Covid-19 testing needs.
